Why I built Calm Money.

A programme by Peter Komolafe. This is how it came to be.

1. Fostered from three months old

Fostered at three months old, I grew up without money. I still remember how my friends’ dinners always smelled better than ours. I had no idea the scarcity mindset forming in those moments would go on to hurt my finances as an adult. At eight, I was told I was going to Nigeria for a two-week holiday. It lasted ten years.

I returned from Nigeria in 1998 with £50 in my pocket and, not understanding how money worked, ended up homeless and sleeping on the streets. By 2001 I was in debt, and I stayed there for over a decade.

2. Canary Wharf

In 2006, I found a job as a bank cashier and worked my way through retail and corporate banking before reaching wealth management in Canary Wharf in 2012. For the first time, I was earning good money, yet I still felt stuck. I understood everyday financial products but knew nothing about investing, and the scarcity mindset from my childhood had me overspending and living for the moment.

Then a manager showed me I was earning enough to buy my first property. That conversation sparked the biggest mindset shift of my life. I set proper goals, stopped spending aimlessly, cleared debt I’d struggled with for over ten years, bought my first home and finally started investing. Not bad for someone who once slept on the streets.

3. Conversations I wish someone had with me

In 2020 I started a YouTube channel, which led to my bestselling book with HarperCollins, The Money Basics: How to Become Your Own Financial Hero, in 2023. I’ve appeared on shows including Lorraine, Steph’s Packed Lunch, Secret Spenders: Beat the Price Rises, Family Budget Switch Up and Jeremy Vine, and as a financial expert on BBC News, Sky News, Channel 5 News and the BBC World Service.

4. Advocating for financial education

I ended up sleeping on the streets because I didn’t understand simple budgeting. It’s why I joined a team campaigning for financial education to be made compulsory in primary schools, taking our case from Parliament all the way to Number 10. From September 2028, children in England as young as five will learn the fundamentals of money in school.

5. Why Calm Money exists

I’ve come a long way from noticing whose dinner smelled better. But the biggest lesson from that journey is one no textbook taught me: you can understand money and still be controlled by it. One conversation shifted my mindset, but it was the action I took afterwards that changed my life. It took years to realise how many people are stuck where I was, earning, trying, and still not moving forward. Calm Money is my answer to that. A place to stop overthinking your money and start taking the steps that move you forward, so you don’t have to wait as long as I did.

“I now have a Calm Money roadmap to a better financial future. I’m calm about money because I have an expert who has my back.”

Before joining
I was on target to earn over £50k in 26/27, but still not making the day-to-day finances work or able to overpay on my mortgage. My mortgage term had come to an end, and my credit rating meant the best remortgage options were off the table.
The doubt, and how it looks now
My main doubt was that I already had a problem with debt, and I was about to spend my little reserves on another training opportunity that could just tell me what I already knew, with no real solution to my problem at the end of it. One month in, those doubts have gone. The money went into the programme, but it was really an investment in me, my family and my future.
Doing now
I’m counting my money.

What tipped it
I thought that addressing how I managed the money I had coming in would improve my situation. That thought was perfectly timed with the launch of the Calm Money community.
Most valuable so far
The improvement in my financial literacy. Following the module, I confirmed I was a ‘Spender’, and that it was linked to my emotions. I had already cut back on buying for myself but was still buying for others. I’d think, ‘Ooh, that would make a nice present for someone at Christmas’, without even knowing who, or ‘Let me just stop and have a nice restaurant lunch here’. Now I avoid shopping for things I don’t need. If I catch myself wandering into a shop to browse, I stop and ask why I went in, and whether there was a trigger.
The support
Peter is patient, kind and listens. When I eventually opened up about my financial concerns, he was empathetic and didn’t seem fazed by what felt to me like a huge problem. He was, I would say, calm about the money issue. Where he didn’t know something, he found another expert in that area to talk to the group or to me. I’ve realised that, practically, some things take time to resolve, and as long as I’m engaging with my creditors, not burying my head in the sand, they do understand. I’m emotionally calmer about my finances, because through this programme I’ve built a roadmap to a better financial legacy.
What it’s like
I expected a noisy (I mean lively!) WhatsApp group that I’d feel bad about not keeping up with, as I’m very busy. It was quite different. It’s relaxed, and if work means I can’t make a meeting, that’s OK. There are modules to complete, but they’re reasonable and achievable. I spend about three hours a week on it.
What I’d tell a friend
When we were at school, we didn’t have financial literacy training to help us understand real-world money. You may not be doing anything wrong, but you could be doing it better with the right roadmap. Calm Money helps you understand who you are and what money is to you, so you can help the people you want to help now and leave a lasting legacy.

Common questions.

How much time does it take?

The five modules are 64 short lessons, about 2.5 hours in total, so most people fit them around work. The real time goes into the practical exercises, applying each module to your own money.

Is this financial advice?

No. Calm Money is financial education. It teaches you how money works and helps you build your own system, it does not recommend specific investments or products for you. For regulated advice, speak to a financial adviser authorised by the FCA.

I’m in debt. Is this still for me?

Yes. Module 2, Breaking the Debt Cycle, gives you a clear plan to pay it off, and the programme shows you how to balance clearing debt with building savings and, later, investing.

“I realise some things take time to resolve. As long as I’m engaging with my creditors, and not burying my head in the sand, they do understand.” Jean M., founding member

I’m self-employed. Does it still work?

Yes, and it’s especially effective if your income is irregular. When your earnings depend on you, it’s easy to swing between feast and famine. We give you a system to stabilise your finances and end that cycle.

What’s the difference between the three options?

Whichever option you choose, you get all five modules, the money personality test, the practical tools, the Calm Money community, Peter’s monthly update and the workshop library, with 12 months’ access that you can renew at the end.

At your pace with coaching adds an onboarding call and four quarterly coaching sessions with Peter, helping you put what you learn into practice and keeping you accountable to the goals you set in Module 0.

12 months of full support includes everything in At your pace with coaching, plus 12 monthly live group calls, WhatsApp access to Peter and two in-person meet-ups.

What is the monthly update?

A short recorded video from Peter each month on what’s changed in UK money, such as interest rates, inflation or the Budget, and what it means for your debt, your safety net and your investing. It also includes a seasonal check of your system and one action for the month.

It’s general education, not financial advice. It isn’t live, so questions for Peter belong in your coaching sessions or live calls.

Where are the meet-ups?

Our in-person meet-ups are in the UK, with dates announced well in advance so you can plan around them and secure your spot.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. At your pace with coaching can be paid as £397 today, then 9 monthly payments of £100. That’s £1,297 in total, with no interest and no extra charge. 12 months of full support can also be paid in instalments, and we’ll set out the options when your place in an intake is confirmed. At your pace is paid upfront.

If you’re currently paying off high-interest debt, don’t put this on a credit card. Start with At your pace and focus on Module 2 first. You can move up to coaching later.

What if it’s not right for me?

Our coaching options are built around action, so our guarantee is too. Complete Module 0 and attend your onboarding call. If the coaching still isn’t right for you, let us know within 30 days of joining and we’ll refund your coaching fee: £900 on At your pace with coaching, or £2,600 on 12 months of full support. You keep At your pace for the rest of your 12 months.

No awkward conversations, no pressure.

At your pace is the content library itself, and you get all of it the moment you join, so it isn’t refundable once you’ve started.
